What Should Be Considered Before The Surgery?

In non-urgent pre-planned surgeries, such as plastic surgeries, especially some points should be considered in advance, and the surgery should be performed after the best possible conditions are provided, to ensure it and the postoperative period to be experienced under favorable conditions.

Aspirin and other similar drugs, vitamins, herbal products and homeopathic preparations mentioned below, which are inconvenient to use, should not be used for a surgery period of one month consisting of 15 days before and 15 days after surgery.

Things to consider before plastic surgery

  • Before the plastic surgery, a detailed pre-discussion and medical inquiry should be made with the surgeon and anesthesiologist, who will perform the surgery, by allocating adequate time. These discussions should include all the details, and the possibilities that may lead to problems during the surgery process should be assessed well. The doctors should allocate adequate time for these discussions, and the patient should give complete and accurate answers to the questions.
  • The patient should not catch cold or flu, should avoid activities that would make the body weak, and make a point of being taken into surgery when her/his general medical condition is excellent. The patient should have a regular sleep routine.
  • Drugs, rugs, vitamins, homeopathic ingredients, and herbal products used before plastic surgery may cause serious bleeding problems and drug interactions during and after surgery. The patient should inform the doctor of the drugs that need to be used, and stop taking other drugs 15 days before the surgery.
  • Aspirin and other aspirin-like drugs that reduce blood clotting may cause severe bleeding problems during and after surgery; so, their intake should be stopped at least 15 days before surgery, and they also should not be used for a period of 15 days after surgery.
  • Depression and hypertension drugs as well as analgesics, which are currently used on a regular basis, should definitely be reported to the doctor in advance.
  • Since birth control pills increase the risk of blood clot formation in the legs, they should not be used 4 weeks prior to surgery.
  • It is absolutely inconvenient for pregnant women to have surgery. For this reason, it is very important to take the necessary precautions to avoid pregnancy between the last menstrual date and the date of operation. In addition, some of the ointments used after the surgery are inconvenient during pregnancy. Therefore, pregnancy should not be planned for at least following 3 months after the operation or the cream should not be used.
  • If the patient has received treatment due to clot formation in the veins, she/he should definitely inform the doctor.

  • Important notice: ıf you are currently using acne treatment medicine that contains isotretinoin or it’s been less than a year since you quit using that medicine, surgery should be postponed. Otherwise it can cause problems about recovery of surgical scars.

  • Smoking and overweight pose a risk in terms of both anesthesia, and blood circulation and wound healing in the tissues. If possible, smoking should be stopped, and the plastic surgery should be planned after getting rid of the extra kilos. Smokers are advised to stop smoking at least 15 days prior to surgery.
  • If the patient is mentally depressed or out of humor, or has other professional or social problems during the period, when the surgery is planned, the surgery should be postponed. A certain period of time needs to pass before the swelling and bruising go away, and the desired result begins to appear, especially in early postoperative period. During this period, it is important to ensure that the patient’s psychological state is well balanced, and morale is good.
  • During the period of several days before plastic surgery, juicy and natural fibrous foods should be consumed, and alcohol should be avoided.
  • Nothing, including water, should be consumed for 8 hours prior to the scheduled surgery. Drugs such as blood pressure medicine etc., which are continuously used on a regular basis, can be taken within the knowledge of the surgery team.
  • If influenza, fever, skin eruption or any other medical problem develops before surgery, inform your doctor immediately.

The night before surgery

  • Take a shower.
  • Spent the evening resting, and go to bed in time.
  • Nothing, including water, should be consumed for 8 hours prior to the scheduled surgery.

Morning of surgery

  • Some drugs required to be taken regularly, such as blood pressure drugs, may need to be taken in the morning of surgery. Talk with your doctor about this in advance, and take your drug in the morning of surgery if necessary.
  • Nothing, including water, should be consumed for 8 hours prior to the scheduled surgery.
  • Remove your contact lenses. Remove your earrings, necklaces, hairpins, etc. Do not bring valuable things with you.
  • Prefer easy-to-wear and comfortable clothes and shoes. Do not choose clothes that do not need to be pulled over your head.
  • After surgery, you will not be allowed to drive back home. Organize your discharge accordingly.

Nutritional supplements to discontinue before surgery

Today, the consumption of herbal nutritional supplements, alleged to be natural, increases with each passing day. Although these products consumed in the form of herbal teas, powders or pills are useful in some cases, they may lead to undesirable consequences by changing the clotting property of blood or interacting with other drugs in such a way as to increase or decrease their effects during surgery period. For example, green tea is frequently consumed and can cause serious bleeding problems.

Nutritional supplements to discontinue 15 days prior to surgery

  • Bilberry (vaccinium myrtillus)
  • Cayenne (capsicum annum)

Do not take aspirin for a period of 15 days before and 15 days after surgery.

Undesirable situations such as severe bleeding, bruises, etc. May develop in individuals who use aspirin, due to the decrease in the clotting property of blood. Therefore, aspirin or drugs containing similar substances should not be used. Patients, who need to use blood thinners such as coumadin, are operated when they use alternative drugs under doctor control. If you need to use a painkiller, you can take a drug that contains paracetamol (parole, minoset).
